In March 2025, we began our second year of offering online education to Yazidi students—both in IDP camps in Kurdistan and in surrounding communities in Iraq. Many of our students are university students, including graduates in civil engineering, education, and various medical fields. Especially the last qualifications greatly improve their chances of finding paid work.
Our English classes are designed to build confidence and improve pronunciation, helping students communicate more clearly and effectively in both academic and professional settings.
And Nasr, our website developer, is staying with us to manage the website and the Moodle platform for the students and the teachers. We could not do this without him either!!
Bringing Reading for Pleasure into the Classroom
We’ve recently introduced Reading for Pleasure into all our classes. Our goal is to teach real, effective communication, not to train grammarians. We follow the Acquisition Method, which emphasizes natural language learning. Grammar will come—with time and context—but our focus is on communication, understanding and using the language meaningfully.
Reading plays a key role in this process. When students read stories they enjoy, their vocabulary grows, their comprehension improves, and confidence builds naturally. Reading for Pleasure isn’t just a method—it’s a doorway to better language learning and a lifelong love of reading.
