About the School

The Yazidi@School Foundation launched English language courses for the Yazidi community in the Mam Rashan IDP camp in Kurdistan in September 2023. Starting in March 2024, all classes transitioned to an online format. The majority of the students are young women and men in their twenties, many of whom were abducted by ISIS and have been unable to continue their education since 2014. Others are eager to learn or improve their English skills, with most aiming to become effective communicators. Yazidi@School is addressing the educational gap caused by the 2014 genocide and its aftermath, focusing on raising students’ proficiency in English, communication, and reading comprehension, in other words: proficiency. Our teachers are highly qualified professionals, many of whom hold TESOL/TEFL certifications. Classes are held at least twice a week for 1.5 hours per session, with the last 30% of class time dedicated to reading books together. This approach helps accelerate the learning process through Acquisition and Implicit learning. Students are also encouraged to use language learning apps such as Duolingo and Busuu five times a day. We offer English courses at all levels, from A1 to C2.

Our mission

Yazidi@School exists to provide free, high-quality online education to Yazidi students whose studies were interrupted by war, displacement, or hardship. Our mission is to empower Yazidi youth through language, learning, and connection. We focus on English education as a bridge to opportunity — helping students gain the skills they need to continue their education, apply for jobs or scholarships, and build hopeful futures. We believe that education is not charity—it is an investment in resilience, dignity, and peace. Through small, interactive classes and compassionate teaching, we create a safe and supportive space where students can learn, grow, and be heard.

Yazidi@School is a volunteer-run online school offering free English education to Yazidi students whose studies were interrupted by war and displacement. We Collect Devices for Students Many Yazidi students—especially those in university—cannot afford a laptop or smartphone. In fact, 95% of Yazidi university students have no laptop at all. At Yazidi@School, we collect used laptops and smartphones to give students access to online classes, homework, and opportunities they would otherwise miss. Your old device can open a future for someone who has already lost too much.
